Students learn a lot of skills though our kindness curriculum.
"The Kindness Curriculum offers a stage based, all-encompassing Social and Emotional Learning program. It addresses and explicitly teaches to the social external tools required to be kind and connect with others, along with the internal emotional skills students need to be kind and connect with themselves."
We use a variety of early learning reading methods such as sight words and Orton-Gillingham. We include reading into all subject areas. In math we have students work in groups at all levels and use hands on learning as a part of our math curriculum. Our Science and Social Studies curriculums are inquiry based and students choose what and how they will learn within the Units.
Elementary students have music, art, and gym/swimming. Our upper school students have a variety of elective choices and can also create their own interest based electives. All students learn about green practices, kindness, have outdoor leaning, and help in the school garden.
Students will make a portfolio each year showing what they learned through their reading. The portfolios are presented to the class and parents twice a year on portfolio night. The students will prepare delicious snacks with cafeteria staff for portfolio night.
Each portfolio has 6 artifacts for each area of study; reading/language arts, math, science, social studies, the arts, and the student dream.
Reading skills are highly valued. We believe these skills are foundational.
Each student has an individual reading assessment plan and timeline tailored to their needs. Students engage in testing weekly, monthly, quarterly or at semester, according to their plan. Students are placed in mixed level math small groups and are assessed four times per year at each quarter. Unlike South Korean schools we are less concerned with test scores and focus more on students understanding the content. High School students take PSAT/SAT/ ACT tests if these will help them achieve their dreams.
Students will do a kindness project two times a year at mid semester. Students will present projects on school kindness days. Students work in small groups on their kindness projects. The students plan the projects using the kindness curriculum: https://thekindnesscurriculum.com/
